Introduction: The given circumstances for this play are essential to the understanding of the play. They determine the entire tone of the piece. This lesson will skew with those given circumstances to not only pique students' interest, but to help them see how key these given circumstances are.
Standard: Alter the environment to indicate setting.
Opening (lesson to be done before the play has been read) (5 min)
- Introduce text to students
- Explain lesson to students
- going to be given a scene with a partner with given circumstances on it
- need to play scene with the mindset of having these given circumstances
- one of these given circumstances is true and one is not
Rehearsal Time (25 min)
- Students choose partners and given a scene with given circumstances on them
- Scene will be two people with given circumstances at the top of the page (ex. Brother and sister who hate each other)
- Teacher will walk around classroom monitoring behavior and giving help as needed
Performance Time (20 min)
- Students will present scenes in class
- Students have to guess what given circumstances are and after that group will announce what they are/ how it impacted their decisions
- Performances not done will be done the next day in class

By changing one aspect of the environment, it changes the entire scene's tone. This environment helps those involved get a better sense of what the setting of the play will be. This one change to the given circumstances will determine all actions done by the actors in the scene.
