The Iceman Cometh
Introduction
- Eugene O’Neill can easily be thought of as the greatest American playwright of all time. If nothing else, he helped define what realism was for 20th century theatre. Students of theatre need to know who he is and what he has done for theatre. Therefore, I would spend one day entirely devoted to his background.
Standards
- Compare and contrast the contribution of individual artists on movements, trends, or periods.
Opening (Lesson to be done before they begin play) 5 min
- Introduce students to what unit is
- Realism
- Reading The Iceman Cometh
- Hand out worksheet to students and tell them they are going to be watching a film on Eugene O’Neill, the playwright
Movie 45 min

- Students will watch film on Eugene O’Neill
- They will have to fill out worksheet that goes along with film, that way it is easier for them to follow along
- Might need to continue on into the next class session
- Compare and contrast the contribution of individual artists on movements, trends, or periods.
- Students will gain a more in depth knowledge of one of the greatest playwrights in American history. As they spend more time learning about this realism movement, they will see how key he is to the movement.
