Discussion Lesson for M. Butterfly
Jaclyn Marta
Independent Study
M. Butterfly, David Henry Hwang
- Introduction
o M. Butterfly is a play that one cannot just be read and leave it be. It needs to be considered, thought about, discussed. Halfway through the book, we get it clearly stated that Song is actually a man and that he has been deceiving Gallimard the whole time and is only with him to find out secrets from him. This will easily garner strong feelings from the class, whether they be on the side of Song or Gallimard. It is something that needs to be discussed and considered hearing multiple opinions before deciding what they consider.
- Standards
o Describe plot techniques used to enhance a drama (e.g., choice of time and place, use of minor characters, introduction of new information, use of musical lyrics).
- Opening (5 minutes) * lesson to be done after the scene where Song removes his makeup on stage *
o Have a student summarize what has happened in the last few scenes
o Ask if people have questions on basic action of the play so far
o Let students know that we are going to focus on Song's revelation today
- Discussion (40 min)
o Tell students to go on 3 possible sides of the room
§ Left for supporting Song
§ Right for supporting Gallimard
§ In the middle for not supporting either
o Have students talk amongst the group to come up with main points as to why others should be on their side
o Every side presents their point, without interruption. After this, people can decide to move on other side
o Students will continue this process, where they are allowed to comment on other people's points or present more points as to why their character is correct
o This will continue on for either 3 times or 40 min, whatever comes first
- Closing (5min)
o Students will start writing a paragraph describing whose side they are on. They will comment on why they are, as well as this class has affected the way
- Describe plot techniques used to enhance a drama (e.g., choice of time and place, use of minor characters, introduction of new information, use of musical lyrics).
o Students will be focusing on the idea of a plot twist to decide how it determines their view of the main characters. They will have to listen to multiple points of view to determine their views on the plot twist and whether they feel affiliated more to the side of Song or Gallimard
